Early this week I was a featured artist at ArtsyShark.com.

Artsy Shark features and promotes artists by publishing individual portfolio articles three times per week. Since 2010, more than 950 artists have been featured. Artsy Shark also does a great job of promoting on all the social marketing platforms.

If you are looking for a great weekend getaway this September consider Brown County, IN. I have been invited this year to give a plein air watercolor demonstration for the Indiana State Museum at the T. C. Steels's estate in Nashville, IN. In addition, I will be co-judging the Great Outdoors Art Contest.

BROWN COUNTY FACT:
There are more artist per capita than anywhere else in the Midwest. WGN recently did a beautiful news story about Brown County titled 'The Little Smoky Mountains: Indiana's beautiful, artistic hill country.' WATCH THE VIDEO HERE.

They also showcased the gallery I'm currently showing in, Brown County Art Gallery. Did you know it's one of the oldest galleries in the United States?

Last year I started exploring the art of making giclées. We did our research asking fellow artists, googling, looking at prints at galleries and shows, and trying several shops. But hands down we thought Osio-Brown in Elmhurst, IL delivered the quality product we expected.

My wife, Marilee's work experience has been in the advertising world; print and digital. We both have a keen eye for color and her techy knowledge helped us with our decision.

Selecting digital printer is a very personal matter. You need to trust then handling your origanal pieces, experience, and judgment when it comes to producing your original work. You will also want to count on their ability to produce your order in a timely manner and to provide great service.

We had a check list of what we were looking in selecting a digital printer:

Recommendations
Years of experience – at least 4 or 5 years. Will they be around in five years?
How is your art stored at their studio
Scanning technology: ask to see system. Check-out lighting if photographed
Color accuracy/color management
Set-up fees: scanning and proofs
Type of printer, latest model, high-resolution, archival inks
Final prints are on watercolor paper
Cost of prints. Bulk discount
Storage fee: keeping your files and how long
Will they burn to DVD and cost for that
Do they have a minimum order
Buy local (our personal belief)
Any added value services: print-on-demand and drop ship to your customers
How often do you backup their files?
Office cleanliness
Professionalism

Dale L Popovich IWS will be judging the 70th annual Phidian Art show in Dixon Tuesday, April 11, 2017. The art show will be held at the Loveland Community House located at 513 W. 2nd St. in Dixon, IL. There are typically about 100 entries and 25 to 28 awards. A minimum of $3500 in cash prizes are awarded to artists in various traditional media categories.

Eligible Media: One dimensional work such as mixed media, paintings, pastels, works on paper, collage, etc. Does not include 3 dimensional work, photography, sculpture, graphic arts.

Artist Deadline: 04/08/2017

Artist Vendor Fees: $25.00

Show Opening: Tuesday, April 11, 2017. Doors open at 6 p.m.; the show and reception are open to the public. Admission is free. The program will begin at 7 PM with a welcomed by the Phidian president, followed by the presentation of awards. As each award is announced, a volunteer will bring the winning piece of work in and placed it on an easel on the stage. Dale will give a brief critique of the artworks that were selected for awards at the award presentation.

Loveland Community House in Dixon is the location for the 70th Annual Phidian Art Show, for many good reasons. It is a well loved and visited center of the community and the arts in Dixon IL. It has been the location for the Phidian Arts Club art show since its inception in 1947. The building itself is a gem of the era, enhanced by the architecture, extensive collections of art, textiles, and furniture, plus a second floor museum of local history. What better place to exhibit and recognize fine art? MAP

I was awarded a commission for a painting by one of my Drawing & Painting Fundamentals students, Cathy, around the end of last year. It was to be a Christmas gift for her father; a mountain stream in Colorado. She emailed me a handful of photos:

Her father on a tractor with a cowboy hat
Her dad petting his black Labrador
Three pictures of the mountain river from probably over 20 years ago

What Cathy wanted was a painting of her dad fly fishing in the river, wearing waders, and his lucky hat. His beloved Labrador playing in the water by his side.

I sketched him fishing in the mountain river with Elephant Mountain showing in the background. I developed a couple roughs that I was happy with and presented to my client. Cathy really was delighted with the one with the Labrador in the river behind her father. Once I had a client direction and approval I went back to the studio, refining the sketch.

Re-evaluated the drawing I decided to add several more pine trees in the background considering 20 years of foliage growth. I also reworked the configuration of the shoreline, adjusted the level of water, and arranging some of the larger rocks.

The biggest challenge I had was estimating the height and width of her father since I only had a photo of him sitting in a tractor showing only the upper torso of his body.

I then had to figure out how the dog would be placed in the water making him look natural to the environment and how the water would be rushing around him. Sometimes you can’t just Google a solution!

Once I was happy with the sketch I transfered it to #300 pound Arches, cold press. Normally, I stay away from frisket because it causes hard edges if you don't use it properly. But in this case I wanted to retain the delicate, fine details of the man, dog, and some of the rock's shape. Frisket allows you to paint uninterrupted washes in the area around your subject such as what you see in this photo below. To read more about my frisket tips CLICK HERE.

I began painting the scene bringing in more greens and blues-greens off to the left of the painting and in front of him compared to the photos. The photograph was pretty much blacked-out, showing no detail. I added a little bit more configuration to the shoreline further in the background to give a better flow. You see once you start laying down pigment you may have to refine the composition.

The Block-in

When I finished the painting I gave Cathy a call telling her that I increased the size of the trees keeping in mind the number of years growth. She told me all the trees have been cut down several years ago because of a beetle infestation. She thought adding more foliage was a good idea because it would bring back wonderful memories to her father.

I presented the final framed painting and Cathy was extremely pleased. But the big challenge was what her father would say.

I called Cathy after the holidays. She said she shipped it out west to her dad. and he was excited to hang the painting.. Needless to say he was thrilled with his Christmas gift.
