Kathy has been entering the Lake County (Indiana) Fair Art Competitions for nearly ten years. She has received a ribbon or two on her watercolors, pastels or acrylics, but this year she won in twelve different categories.

Kathy said she has been painting and drawing since she was a little girl. Her fondest childhood memories were summertime visits to grandma's. They would go into the garden and pick flowers. Then they would go into her grandma's studio and she would show Kathy how to paint the pretty little bouquet.

Kathy said she would paint off and on when her children were young, but she finally got serious about her art in the last fifteen years. Now that her kids have grown up and have their own lives she can focus on her passion. Thanks to Dale he has challenged her and encourage her to strive even harded.

I'll be giving a one-day workshop this autumn, October 6th at LOLA, Land 'O Lakes Area Artisans in Land 'O Lakes, WI. Northern Wisconsin is an amazing place in the autumn. Why not plan a trip up north for the fall color show in Vilas County, the Cranberry Fest and my one-day workshop.

EXPLORE PAINTING IN WATERCOLOR
In this workshop you will learn to implement key concepts of watercolor painting. Techniques that will allow you to have a deeper understanding of the medium. Demonstration, a break for lunch and in the afternoon you will be painting from one of the instructor's photos or your own. Workshop will concentrate on composition, controlling wet on wet washes, drybrush, spattering and lifting of the medium with one-on-one instruction.This workshop will be in invaluable opportunity for beginners, intermediate or advance painters to gain new insights and painting with watercolor.

Fredi Kolted attended the American Academy of Art in the 1980s. Although working in oils at that time, in the recent past she was introduced to watercolors by a friend and fellow artist and was interested in learning how to work in this medium. She has been attending my studio classes for the last year and recently had her first, very successful One-Woman Show in New Buffalo, Michigan selling many pieces.

Fredi began showing her work in this gallery in February 2014. From the gallery owner she learned that the colors and airy quality in her work appealed to many viewers. Her pieces were purchased as gifts or chosen for that “perfect spot” in someone’s home.

Because of this interest, the owner asked if she would consider holding a show which would entail providing at least eight new paintings specifically for the event. The artwork was showcased on the primary wall of the gallery. Champagne and homemade chocolates were provided to guests. Six paintings sold as a result of this show.

This show was titled “Around the Bend” and was a “collection of watercolors inspired by a quiet beauty found while meandering down country roads.”

Because of her love of the outdoors, many of Fredi’s paintings include rustic farms, summer landscapes and flower gardens in bloom. Reference photos come from her own back yard or farm stands, lakes and parks in rural Indiana and Michigan.

Recently Fredi has been working on commissioned pieces with subject matter as eclectic as public libraries and dairy cows. She is also in conversations with a restaurant in Mishawaka, Indiana to show pieces there.

#Glendalyyn Doorn-Specht won Best of Show at the 2014 Michigan Artist Competition. back in June.
Glendalynn had attended my night classes at the American Academy of Art with her mom in the 80s. She had a demanding fulltime job at Leo Burnett as a media buyer, but had an intense passion for learning and art. She took part-time fundamentals classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and I found her to be a very good draft person with a strong desire to learn how to #DrawAndPaint. Some 30 years later, after raising a family, she again contacted me at my studio to pick up #DrawingAndPainting. She's taking classes with me at the Palette & Chisel in Chicago and has also attended classes in my private studio in my home. After several months of working hard she received the first place award at The 2014 Michigan Artists Competition. Glendalynn's contact email is gldspecht@gmail.com.

Artist Description: Glendalynn shared with me that the painting was referenced from a photo taken by her friend and fellow hiker, Mike Buchheit, Director of the Grand Canyon Field Institute.  She said Arizona’s Grand Canyon holds a special place in her heart –"When I am there, I am home. As a hiker and backpacker, I have been on the well-traversed corridor trails, and also on some of the more isolated back country trails in the Canyon. I have also enjoyed a white water adventure starting from Lees Ferry. This painting captures the feeling of pure awe and anticipation that I felt getting into the boat that would take me on an 8-day journey into the heart of that amazing Grand Canyon."
The Award: Award was a cash award, part of which went to The Grand Canyon Association.
Biography: Glendalynn Doorn-Specht, NCTM 
While currently residing in Michigan, Glendalynn Doorn-Specht is a native Chicagoan, and Chicago is where her heart will always be. She is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music with a private music studio near Gull Lake in Southwest Michigan. Glendalynn has had the privilege of studying the visual arts at the American Academy of Art and The Palette and Chisel in Chicago, and at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her most influential instructors have been Dale Popovich and Jon McDonald. When she is not busy with the visual arts or with all things musical, she is running, hiking, backpacking, or kayaking.

UPDATE: Great evening last night. Attended the 36th Annual Indiana Heritage Exhibition in Nashville, Indiana. As always it was an impressive show with some of the best classical trained talent Indiana has to offer. I'm always humbled when I get the postcard letting me know I'm included in this year's juried exhibition.

The collection was primarily oil but also included 6 watercolors, 10 pastels, 6 acylics, a charcoal, a pencil, a graphite and a blockprint. There were 121 pieces in in total.

Marilee and I arrived when the doors opened. I knew from the postcard all three watercolors made it in and one was a winner. I was overwhelmed to see my painting 'Miner's Falls' won third place -- $2000 prize. In addition, by the end of the evening 'A Quiet Spring Flowage' was sold. JUNE 5TH: All three of my watercolors have been accepted into the IHA 36th Annual Exhibition & Sale in Nashville, IN. Got the postcard today and it's stamped IHA Winner–WOO-HOO! This is my 10th year of being included in this prestiges show. This is a great show – one of my favorites because it continues to promote the Brown County Art Colony philosophy. A must see. Friday, June 6th will be the opening and awards ceremony. Doors open at 5:00pm eastern time. The Prize winners will collect potentially 90 thousand dollars in awards and purchases if the record pace from the 2013 show continues.

Juror of Selection was Jason Allen Saunders. Jason received his B.A. from David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. There he obtained a strong foundation of painting under Dawn E. Whitelaw. During and shortly after college, Jason travelled to study with three of America’s most treasured artists: Everett Kinstler, Matt Smith, and Scott L. Christensen. Currently, Jason lives and paints primarily in the beautiful hills of middle Tennessee.

Hours are 10 to 5pm daily and noon to 5 pm on Sundays. The Brown County Art Gallery is located at the corner of Main Street and Artist Drive Nashville All artwork is for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Indiana Heritage Arts which is a non-profit organization that promotes and supports Hoosier heritage style artists.

The Illinois Watercolor Society's 30th National Exhibition awards ceremony was held on May 10th at The Last Picture Show Gallery in Dixon, IL. Fifty-five paintings were selected for this exhibition by selection/awards judge Lenox Wallace. Dale Popovich's painting Winter Captures Fall was juried into this year's show.
