A short walk from the highway on the way to Lake Superior, I noticed a river flowing quietly beneath the bridge. Here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the hills rise higher and the valleys grow deeper, creating hidden places where the landscape seems to slow down. It was early morning, and the first hints of autumn had begun to color the banks. The unnamed river moved softly northward toward Lake Superior, carrying with it the colors of the land through which it traveled.
The water reflected the pale morning sky and the dark silhouettes of the surrounding pines, their shapes dissolving gently across the surface. Every so often, the current revealed glimpses of the riverbed below, where deep reds and warm oranges from the iron-rich earth added another layer of color. It was one of those quiet Northwoods moments you can easily miss if you are simply passing through. Sometimes, the best discoveries are found just beyond the road.
