Had a great time at the Arlington Heights Art Guild. on Thursday night. Founded more than 40 years ago, the Arlington Heights Art Guild today has more than 100 members who meet to learn and share their interest in various forms of art. The organization draws from various surrounding communities in addition to the Arlington Heights base.
A landscape scene was demostrated using a full color palette:
I had to laugh when I told the group that I've owned and used my 1" flat real hair brush for 40 years – They gasped! I told them if you buy real hair, purchase the best brushes you can afford, and take good care of them they will last a lifetime. Real hair brushes load better than synthetic. This is very important to the sucess of a great painting. If you can't afford a real hair brush a real hair/synthetic blend is the next best thing.
Watercolor study was completed in about an hour and was donated to the Guild's raffle for their spring scholarship fund.
Thank you for the warm response and great turnout.

The Midwest Museum of American Art is pleased to announce the 37th Elkhart Juried Regional Art Exhibition
I am happy to announce both of my entries were excepted into The Midwest Museum of American Art 37th Elkhart Juried Regional Art Exhibition, October 9 - December 6, 2015. This all-media competition is open to artists 18 years and older who are residents of Allen, DeKalb, Elkhart, Fulton, Jasper, Kosciusko, Lake, LaGrange, LaPorte, Marshall, Newton, Noble, Porter, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke, Steuben or Whitley counties in Indiana and Berrien, Branch, Cass, or St. Joseph counties in Michigan.
The Midwest Museum of American Art is an Indiana hidden treasure. The Midwest Museum of American Art is a showcase of the 19th and 20th century American Art, with original paintings by Grandma Moses and Norman Rockwell. Along with the original Norman Rockwell the Midwest Museum houses a large collection of hand signed lithographs by this famous American artist. In all, the permanent collection numbers over 6,000 works with approximately 900 on display at any time during the year.
The juried show takes up most of the museum's gallery space. I would advise you to see the museum's permanent collection after the show comes down. My favorite pieces were Sargent's charcoal from the 20's (I had never seen before) and a L. C.. Leyendecker. http://midwestmuseum.us
I am very honored – yesterday I won Best of Show at the Illiana Artists 16th Regional Juried Exhibition at the Chesterton Art Center. Thank you everyone for the overwhelming support and praise.
I’m humbled and honored to have been once again juried into the prestigious Indiana Heritage Arts 37th Exhibition. This impressive Brown County (Nashville, IN) 123 piece show is of primarily Indiana oil painters. They said there was 400 submissions this year. All three of my watercolor paintings were juried into the show and there was a total of 9 watercolors accepted. I was awarded the Ronald O. Elkins Memorial Award for my painting “Rapids Below Hatcher Pass, Alaska” presented by Dan Woodson. This is my 11th year in the show. Thank you IHA. www.indianaheritagearts.org
I hope you had as much fun as I did on Saturday, May 2. I teaching a watercolor class this spring and then taking the summer off. I will be back this autumn at the Elmhurst Art Museum teaching another watercolor class.
Remember, watercolor painting is not just the process of applying pigment to paper. It is knowing what color, what value, what temperature and what intensity to use create form, depth and rhythm to create a work of art.
If you have any question regarding workshops or classes feel free to drop me an email or give me a call.
I'll be doing a casual demonstration and answering questions at the Elmhurst Art Museum
So what are you doing on Saturday, May 2? How about spending the day at the 19th ART IN THE PARK in Elmhurst, IL. I'll be at the Elmhurst Art Museum's Education Center Studios (across the street), from 11:00am through 4:00pm giving a casual demonstration and answering any painting and drawing questions. The museum will offer free admission on Saturday and Sunday.
