HIGHLAND | The LACORE meeting was held at the Gloria Dei (Glory to God) Church, 3711 Ridge Road, Highland, IN, 46322 where visitors are always welcome. Dale L Popovich IWS took the art league through his classical approach of watercolor painting. To a full house of members and guests coming in from Chicago and Dixon, IL he started with photo reference on his iPad and a pencil sketch on 300 lb. Arches watercolor paper. He took his one-inch brush and immediately laid down bold color washes. He explained every stroke along the way adding stories and humor throughout the demo. Over the course of an hour and a half he turned a white sheet of paper into a snow covered rural Midwest farm scene. After several minutes of question and answers Popovich’s demo was raffled. LACARE’S first official board meeting was called to order on May 18, 1971. The organization of a league for the purpose of mutual encouragement, education, and enjoyment of participation in arts and crafts grew out of this beginning. The name “LACARE”, spelled as though it were a French word, was chosen as an acronym for LAKE AND CALUMET REGION ART LEAGUE.
LACARE is an Indiana based chartered non-profit organization with a Constitution and By-Laws. LACARE’s constitution states that the object of the Art League “will be sharing of knowledge and interests of the individual and the community in artistic endeavors”. Monthly art or craft demonstrations, art or craft workshops, juried show participation, monthly newsletters, picnic, Member Appreciation luncheon, and trips to various art museums and other places of interest are offered to the membership. LACARE meets the FOURTH MONDAY of every month except December and the THIRD MONDAY in months when there is a holiday falling on the fourth Monday. Doors are open at 1:00 PM, a short business meeting at 1:30 PM, followed by an art or craft demonstration. Refreshments are served. The meetings are held at the Gloria Dei (Glory to God) Church, 3711 Ridge Road, Highland, IN, 46322. Meetings are open to visitors. Call Ann Noldin at 219-864-0593 for more information. Watercolor Mainstreet Art Center with Dale Popovich Starts March 5 - April 23, 2014 Wedneday 10:00 - 12:30 $175.00 8 weeks Thank you Illiana Artists for inviting me to demo last Monday night. I was happy to see a great turnout even though the weather has been questionable.
My demo was taking a fall scene and changing the season to a winter, snow painting. I walked the group through my thought process, techniques and and when to stop. I talked about temperature conversion to a winter scene, adjustment of values and changing your light source. I'm a big believer in utilizing the photo reference as a starting point -- it's a tool. You are not a slave to the photo, but using your imagination to create your finished product. This will give you a unique and rewarding experience. Dale L Popovich, Illiana Artists member will demonstrate his techniques in watercolor on February 10, 2014 at 6:30pm at The Westminster Presbyterian Church, 8955 Columbia Avenue, Munster, Indiana 46321. He was the Second Place winner at the Illiana Artists' 15th Juried Exhibition last August at the Chesterton Art Center in Chesterton, IN. Dale is an award-winning watercolorist and teacher who is passionate about capturing the raw beauty of the American landscape with the fluid stroke of a brush. Talent and training aside, it’s Dale’s vision that best informs his work. Temporarily blinded at age 20 for 1-1/2 years, Dale learned to rely on his mind’s eye to sustain him. After a nine hour major brain surgery removing a cyst on his optic nerve, he had to learn how to walk, talk and write again. With vision finally restored, he discovered he could see more clearly than before, easily filtering out the visual “noise” around him to focus on a subject’s essentials. His paintings began to reflect a certain purity of perception, and this “way of seeing” became the hallmark of his painting. Trained at The American Academy of Art in Chicago by Director and President, Irving Shapiro, AWS. Dale was deeply inspired by this great American twentieth-century watercolorist. Dale later taught for many years at The American Academy of Art. Many of Dale's paintings carry a piece of his youth, spending his childhood summers in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, he learned to love its colors, textures, denizens and moods. Today, his paintings celebrate these American landscapes and man’s humble efforts to tame it. Currently, Dale teaches at the prestigious Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago. The Palette and Chisel is an association of representational artists, founded in Chicago in 1895, is the second oldest artist organization in the United States, and membership is by an invitation only. He also has workshops, demos, and teaches weekly classes in his own studio in Highland, IN. He takes a holistic approach to painting with his students. Devoted to both painting and teaching, Dale’s work hangs in collections around the country. PLUS ILLIANA ARTISTS MEMBERS Bring a non-member fellow artist and get a chance to WIN a half hour private critique with the artist You could win a chance to have Dale give you a private critique of your artwork for a half hour in his studio.
